Climber on 007 tree |
Giant trees are recognised world wide for their cultural significance and their ability to inspire awe and wonder. Tasmania has the right combination of environmental factors - climate, soils and fire regime - to foster the growth of trees to massive height and girth. Around the globe, all of the areas which produce big trees have similar climates. Forestry Tasmania is responsible for the management of Tasmania's State forests and has a policy of protecting trees which are 85 metres or more in height, or 280 cubic metres in volume. There are currently 57 known giant trees in Tasmania (Aug 2004). <Giant Trees Register as at March 2007 (pdf format)> If you know of the whereabouts of a possible giant trees in State Forest or other land in Tasmania, print off a copy of the nomination form, fill in the details and send it to the Giant Trees Consultative Committee. More information about nominating can be found here on the nominations page. |
