Forestry Tasmania is responsible for the management of Tasmania's State forests and has a policy of protecting trees which are 85 metres or more in height, or 280 cubic metres in volume. You can find the Giant Trees Policy and Standard Operating Procedures relating to forestry operations and giant trees below. You can find maps and location details on Forestry Tasmania's website for giant trees. Some are near roads or tracks and can be easily viewed. For maps <click here> Foresters measure tree diameter at 1.3 metres above the ground on the uphill side of the tree. A tree with a diameter of 4.5 metres or greater (that's 14 metres girth) will possibly have sufficient volume to be classed as a massive giant. Measuring the heights of giant trees accurately is often difficult in thick forest. Nevertheless if you find a tall tree, try measuring its height and nominating it. If you cannot supply all of the information required on the form, still make your nomination. Forestry Tasmania has accredited tree measurers who will accurately validate nominated trees. If you find a really tall tree let us know! Forestry Tasmania welcomes the nomination of new giant trees records that can be used to update the Registers. For a printable list of the data required <click here>, or for a pdf version <click here>. Completed forms should be sent to: Giant Trees Register
